Gout: Overview

Gout is a condition involving flare-ups of joint pain due to the deposition of urate crystals in the joint space. Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. It is commonly controlled by restricting high purine foods (such as stone fruit) from the diet and/or the use of medications that reduce uric acid levels in the blood. Acute flare-ups are usually managed with pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
