New Study Raises Concerns about Daily Aspirin Use in People Without a History of Heart Disease
A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicines highlights safety concerns about aspirin use by people without a history of heart disease. The subjects in this study who had never had a heart attack or stroke regularly took either aspirin or a placebo (inactive sugar pill) to determine whether aspirin benefits people who have no history of established heart disease.
In this study, aspirin users were more likely to have a serious gastrointestinal bleeding event, a known side effect of frequent aspirin use. Although the aspirin group showed a reduction in nonfatal heart attacks, the overall risk of dying during the study was the same among the aspirin and placebo users. While previous studies had suggested that regular aspirin use could prevent cancer, this study did not show this benefit.
Research continues to support to use of aspirin by patients who have a history of heart disease, including a history of heart attack or stroke. The benefits of lowering the risk of a second heart attack or stroke outweigh the risk of side effects from aspirin in these patients..

Was bedeutet das?
The risk of bleeding events from daily aspirin use is a well known side effect. For patients with heart disease or a history of heart attack or stroke, the benefits of aspirin in reducing the risk of a second heart attack or stroke continue to outweigh the risks. If your doctor has prescribed aspirin, please continue to take the aspirin as directed by your doctor especially if you are taking aspirin for a heart or stroke related condition.
If you are taking aspirin over-the-counter without the guidance of your doctor, or if you do not know why your doctor has prescribed aspirin, this alert is a good reminder to review with your doctor your use of aspirin and discuss the benefits and risks of aspirin in your situation.
If you have any questions about the benefits or safety of aspirin or any of your other medicines, please speak to your doctor.
